The Penticton Vees have dropped their opening game 3-2 to the host Portage Terriers at this year’s RBC Cup, the annual Junior A national championship.
It was the third matchup between the teams in just over a week. The Vees defeated the Terriers in the Western Canada Cup final last weekend after losing to them in the round robin.
On Saturday, the Vees Patrick Newell opened the scoring early, at 5:22 of the first, on a cross-crease pass from Tyson Jost down low and then scored again early in the third unassisted to tie the game at 2-2. But it wasn’t enough.
The Terriers Tanner Jago notched the 3-2 winner at 12:10 of the third..
Shawn Bowles had scored the Terriers’ opening goal with no time left on the clock at 20:00 of the first, with the Vee’s Patrick Sexton in the box on a 4 minute high sticking call.
Shots were close, with the Vees holding a slight 33-32 advantage. Hunter Miska took the loss, while Zac Robiodoux got the win for the Terriers.
The Vees play again Sunday vs the Melfort Mustangs, and then again on Tuesday against the Carleton Place Canadians.
