PG Cougars open training camp with high hopes

This weekend the Prince George Cougars are welcoming more than 100 players and their families to PG for their 2015 training camp.

The camp starts at noon Friday, August 28th and wraps up around 9:00 pm Monday, August 31st.

Fans are invited out get their first look at the potential roster for the 2015-16 WHL season.

Five NHL draftees, Jansen Harkins (Winnipeg Jets, Round 2), Jesse Gabrielle (Boston Bruins, Round 4), Brad Morrison (New York Rangers, Round 4), Sam Ruopp (Columbus Blue Jackets, Round 5) and Tate Olson (Vancouver Canucks, Round 7) will take to the ice along with 20-year-old forward Chase Witala (38 goals in 2014-15) and 17-year-old draft eligible defenceman Josh Anderson (3rd pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft).

Sixteen-year-old WHL bantam draft picks Justin Almeida (5th in 2014) and Max Martin (Drafted 27th) are back for their second camp, while this year’s 2000 birth year draftees Jackson Leppard (8th), Jonas Harkins (28th) and Tyler Ho (66th) aim to make a strong impression at their first camp.

“There definitely is an excitement in the air in the City of Prince George,” states General Manager, Todd Harkins.

“Last season the Prince George Cougars took a big step forward getting back to the playoffs, and now it’s all about continuing our positive momentum. It all starts with training camp which we know is going to be extremely competitive with many returning talented players and young eager prospects knocking on the door.”

Registration begins at noon Friday and wraps up at 2:00 PM.

A welcome meeting will then take place at 2:30 PM before the 1999 and 2000-born players will take the ice for a Young Guns Game at 4:00 PM.

A full day of scrimmages takes place on Saturday, August 29th starting at 10:00 AM and running all the way through 9:15 PM.

Players will then return to the CN Centre on Sunday at 10:00 AM for more scrimmages and meetings, which will also run until 9:15 PM.

All of the remaining players at camp will participate in a Black vs. White Intra-squad game at 7:00 PM Monday evening at CN Centre.

Admission for the Black vs. White game will be free.

August 27:

9:00 am – 6:00 pm – Max VO2 – UNBC (Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre)

5:30 pm – 7:30 pm – Goalie Session

August 28:

Camp begins for all players

12-2 pm – Player Registration – Front lobby of CN Centre

2:30 pm – Training Camp Meeting to be held in concession area of the Kin 1 Arena

4-6 pm – Young Guns Game (Team Betts vs. Team Connolly)

6:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Goalie Session
