The Canadian Sports School Hockey League kicked off it’s new season last night, with a single Midget Prep division game at the Okanagan Hockey Training Centre in Penticton. Six more Midget Prep games are slated for the remainder of the weekend.
In the opener, Kelowna-based PoE shut out the home team OHA White, 5-0. After a scoreless first, PoE dominated the rest of the game, outshooting White 31-6 over the final two periods, scoring twice in the second and three times in the third.
PoE travels back to Winfield Saturday to host OHA Red, and then will face White again on Sunday to complete their three game opening weekend.
In other games, defending regular season champion Burnaby Winter Club Midget Prep will open with a pair of games at the Charley Purdey Arena in Shawnigan, Saturday night at 7:00 and Sunday morning at 10:30.
BWC went 34-1-1 in the regular season last year (259GF-72GA), Shawnigan were 21-10-5 (153GF-122GA), finishing in sixth place.
BWC fell to eventual playoff champion North Alberta Xtreme in the playoffs. NAX had finished the regular season one point up on Shawnigan.
Another series also starts on the Island this weekend, with Delta meeting Pacific Coast at Westhills Arena at 3:30 PM Saturday and playing the rematch Sunday at 11:30 AM.
Delta battled BWC for top position for most of the season last year, but tailed off after the halfway point, finishing third overall with a 27-8-1 record (171GF-79GA), a win and a tie behind second place Rink out of Winnipeg (197GF-82GA).
Pacific Coast finished last year with a 19-16-1 record, in ninth place overall, (155GF-128GA).
In the other opening weekend match-up, Yale will visit West Vancouver for a game at Hollyburn Country Club Saturday at 8:40 PM.
Yale finished a point behind OHA Red, in fourth place overall last season, at 26-8-2, (217GF-126GA), with the second highest goals for record.
In its first year in the Prep Division last year, West Van finished with a 9-25-2 record (93GF-189GA).
