The Victoria Grizzlies looked no further than their own backyard in announcing the team’s captain for the 2014-15 B.C. Hockey League season.
Victoria native Shawn McBride takes over the captaincy from graduated Grizzly Mark McLellan.
“Our organization today has selected a player that exemplifies what it is to be a Grizzly,” general manager and head coach Brad Knight said in a statement. “His character and commitment to our organization and community speaks volumes for the type of person Shawn is.
“When you look at the rich history of success our hockey club has had, it’s only fitting that Shawn be the captain that continues with our legacy.”
McBride, 18, came up through the Saanich minor hockey program and recorded five goals and 11 assists in 58 games and was named co-Most Dedicated Player in his rookie season with the Grizzlies.
“We as an organization are proud to promote a local kid who has paid his dues and has earned this right,” added Knight.
“Shawn will be a proud representative and someone who other local kids can and will look up to. He has time for everyone and will be a role model both on and off the ice. His calm presence and desire to win makes him the perfect fit not only for our team, but in what our vision is to be a Grizzly.”
The Junior A hockey club opens training camp next Thursday at Juan de Fuca Arena.
