The North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks or Okanagan Hockey Academy Red will represent BC in the Final of this year’s John Reid Memorial tournament in St. Albert on Sunday.
The two BC teams playoff this afternoon in the semi. The winner will advance to face Winnipeg Monarchs or the LA Kings.
The semis were set up on a couple of thrillers Saturday morning.
NSWC lead South Side Athletic Club 3-1 going into the third but got into penalty problems and SSAC roared back to tie 3-3o and force the OT.
Justin Almeida was the OT hero again for the Hawks, notching the winner on a shot to the top shelf from the slot, on a set up from Jordy Bellerive and Nolan Kneen. David Tendeck was in net for the win. Dorrin Luding will start in the semi.
Almeida got the OT winner in the final vs SSAC last year.
The Hawks were playing without the services of Eathan DeJong who suffered a shoulder separation in an earlier game.
LA knocked out Kelowna based Pursuit of Excellence (POE) 4-3 in a game decided by the final shoot-out player, Cam Hausinger.
OHA advanced on a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames.
OHA and NSWC have only played each other once this year, at a Denver tournament in December. NSWC won that contest 4-1.
Prognosis? NSWC beat LA 4-1 in the opening game of the round robin. OHA beat the Winnipeg Monarchs 6-3 in their second game of the tournament. So one could argue, this semi is a matchup of the two top teams in the tourney. Not that anyone will remember that, though, after the final.
