Stapley named NCHC Rookie of the Week

DENVER – Denver Pioneers men’s hockey freshman forward Brett Stapley has been named NCHC Rookie of the Week, the NCHC announced on Monday.

In two games against No. 2 St. Cloud State, Stapley logged one goal, two assists, an even rating and two shots on goal.

The Campbell River, B.C. native and Montreal Canadiens prospect notched a breakaway goal and a primary power-play assist on Friday, then tallied another primary helper on Saturday.

At the time of the annoucement Monday, he was on a four-game point streak with one goal and four assists. He is now 2G-6A since the annoucement.

Stapley played two years of Bantam A1 at the North Shore Winter Club, winning silver at Westerns in his first year and gold in his second year (2013-2014).

After a year of Major Midget on the Island with the Silvertips, he joined the BCHL Vernon Vipers, playing three years there, finishing with 27G-32A-59 points last year.

He totaled 121 points (47-74-121) in 154 BCHL games and represented Canada West at the 2017 World Junior A Challenge, recording three (3) points (2-1-3) in five (5) games. He also participated in the 2018 CJHL Prospects Game.

 

 

Four other BC players are on the club, lead by alternate captain Jarid Lukuosevicius (95, Powell River Kings), a senior from Squamish (named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week November 5;  Liam Finlay (97 – Vernon Vipers) from Kelowna, Tyler Ward (99 – USHL Tribune-City Storm) from Kamloops, and another freshman, Brendan Budy (00 – Langley Rivermen) from Langley.

Update: The #7 nationally ranked Pioneers knocked off the #1 ranked University of Minnesota Duluth 2-0 on November 16 to add one more win to their hot streak.
