They were stars in the BCHL, and minor hockey, and now the work they’ve put in at the NCAA level will see Steven Iacobellis and Travis St. Denis given extra responsibility next season.
Iacobellis has been named captain for the University of Massachusetts Minutemen while St. Denis will be an alternate captain at Quinnipiac University.
A former standout with Penticton, Cowichan Valley and Salmon Arm, Iacobellis earned captaincy after a vote from his teammates.
“Steven’s career has been marked by unrelenting competitiveness and consistent productivity,” said UMass head coach Steven Micheletto. “I’m thrilled that his teammates have elected him captain and am excited for the future of UMass Hockey with him as our captain.”
Iacobellis has totaled 19 goals and 26 assists for 45 points over his first two seasons with the Minutemen. In three BCHL seasons, the Burnaby BC product rang up 35 goals and 65 assists for 100 points in 149 games.
Iacobellis played minor hockey at BWC, and was a team mate with Ryan Nugent Hopkins when the team were BC champions in 2007-2008.
St. Denis was also chosen to wear an ‘A’ after a vote by the team. He’s coming off a season that saw him match a personal NCAA career-high with 15 goals while reaching new bests in assists with 18 and points with 33. He led the Bobcats with five game-winning goals and was twice named conference player of the week.
Over four BCHL seasons, three in his hometown of Trail and one in Penticton, St. Denis registered 99 goals and 127 assists for 226 points in 203 games.
