At the end of the day, the home town Swedes were wearing gold, Russia silver, and USA bronze, as the U18 World Hockey Championships came to a close on Sunday.

Canada finished fourth, after falling to 4-3 in OT to the Swedes in the semi and losing 5-2 to the USA in the bronze medal game Sunday.

Russia had prevailed in their semi vs USA, winning 3-2 in a shoot-out.

Canada last medaled in 2015, whereas the USA extended their medal streak to 16 years.

Canada faced Finland, Czech, Belarus and Switzerland in Pool Play, going 4-0-0-0, with a 29GF-10GA record.

USA faced Sweden, Russia, Slovakia and Latvia, and also were also 4-0-0-0 after the round robin, with 31GF-10GA.

The eventual gold medal Swedes were 3-0-0-1L in the round robin with 14GF-9GA. They won 4-3 in OT vs Russia in the gold medal game.

Russia were 2-0-0-2L in the round robin, with 14GF-13GA. They shut-out Finland 6-0 in the quarter-final.

Canada defeated Latvia 3-1 in the quarter-final before losing to the Swedes in the semi.

 

Scoring Leaders

The American team dominated the top of the scoring stats board, taking the top four spots. Jack Hughes (above, accepting Bronze from tournament chairman Frank Gonzales) lead with 20 points, which pushed him ahead of Alexander Ovechkin’s two year tournament record, with 31 total.
Americans Cole Caulfield lead in goals scored, with 14 for 18 points, and with +12; Matthew Boldy was third overall with 3G-9A, and defenceman Cam York finished fourth with 4G-7A.
Canadians held three of the next four spots.
Peyton Krebs lead Canada with 7G-6A, followed by Alex Newhook with 5G-5A, and Dylan Cozens with 4G-5A, 8th overall.
Russia’s Rodion Amirov was 7th overall, with 6G-3A.
Rounding out the Top 10 were USA’s Alex Turcotte, tied with Cozens, and the lone Swede in the group, Karl Henriksson.

Spencer Knight, Team USA, Top Goaltender
In nets, the USA’s Spencer Knight was tops, with the best save percentage at .936, and best GGA at just 1.51. Knight played the second most minutes in the tournament, at 357:33 minutes over seven games,  just back of Russia’s Yaroslav Askarov, with 363:47. Spencer also played the highest percentage of time in nets for team goaltenders, with 83.15%.
Canada’s Nolan Maier was second overall in save percentage, with .925, and third best in GGA, with 2.67, over five games. He was player of the game for Canada in the bronze medal game. Maier played 43% of game time for Canada. Taylor Gauthier played 57%, and finished ranked 7th overall, with a .913 save percentage and 3.02 GGA.
Canadian goalies gave up the most power play goals against, reflecting the higher number of penalties taken by the team.
Compared to USA, Canada was 94 PIM vs 64; and 71.43% on the penalty kill, vs the USA’s 84.62%. Canada were assessed the second most penalties overall, slightly behind Slovakia’s 107. The USA in contrast, had second fewest, just behind gold medal Sweden who had 66 PIM.
Head to head, Canada’s goalies posted a .919 save percentage vs .916 for the USA tenders, second and third best respectively. The Swedes were tops with at .933.
Czech Lukas Parik was the third ranked individual goalie, with .925 save percentage and 3.54 GGA, just ahead of the Swedes’ Hugo Alnefelt. .921 and 2.75.
