U18’s down USA and Czech for 7th Gold

BRECLAV, Czech Republic – Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team scored four times in a 13-minute span of the first period to set the stage for a 6-2 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday and a seventh consecutive gold medal at the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.

The Canadian team were undefeated in the tournament, winning their 4 preliminary games by a combined 21 GF vs 5 GA record.

Thornhill, Ontario’s Mitchell Marner (London-OHL) scored three points in the gold medal game to put him at the top of Canada’s offensive stats leaderboard, with seven points (2G-5A) for the tournament.



Four players were a point behind with six, including two BC players, Mathew Barzal 2G-4A  and Jansen Harkins also 2G-4A.

Lawson Crouse, of Mount Brydges, ON, scored in every game, including two in the final, to lead the goal-scorers with six (0-A).

Zachary Sawchenko of Calgary (Moose JAW – WHL), saw most of the duty between the pipes, playing in every game except the 5-1 game against Slovakia, allowing 9 G on 97 shots on goal; five of them in the crazy 11-5 game against the USA on Friday.

Callum Booth of Montreal (Quebec, QMJHL), won the 5-1 game, facing 13 shots from the Slovaks.

In the game vs USA Friday night, Mississauga’s Dylan Strome scored first and then added two more later in the game to lead the Canadians in the 11-5 rout.

Jansen Harkins scored short-handed to give Canada a 3-1 lead at the end of the first.

Mathew Barzal answered USA’s second goal early in the second, to open a 4-2 lead.

Travis Konecny of Clachan, ON (Ottawa-OHL) then scored twice before Lawson Crouse finished the period with a goal to give Canada an 8-3 lead.

In the third BC’s Adam Musil and Tyler Soy, along with Mitchell Stephens of Peterborough (Saginaw – OHL), scored to complete the 11-5 rout.

The four BC forwards tallied 8 of Canada’s 30 points in the game.
