The West Van Hockey Academy has announced the hiring of former Prince George Cougars General Manager Todd Harkins.

Harkins joined West Van officially August 13, as the Director of Program Development and will also take the reins as Head Coach of the Bantam Varsity team.

Harkins has considerable experience working with, and developing, young talent. Prior to joining the Prince George Cougars, Harkins was the Hockey Director at the North Shore Winter Club for 12 years, having an instrumental role in building their development program, including several trips to the Western Canada Bantam Championships.

Harkins also coached the NW Giants Major Midget teams to several championships during his tenure at NSWC.

Harkins, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, played at Miami University for three seasons from 1987-1990, going 27-17-44 in 40 games in his final year. He was drafted by the Calgary Flames and played in the Flames and Hartford Whalers organizations for five seasons, before wrapping his pro career after four years in Germany.

“Adding someone of Todd’s experience, passion, and dedication is certainly a tremendous asset for our program, our students, and our families,” said Nathan Fischer, West VanAcademy Founder and Director.

“Todd is keen to get to work on future program development plans, and his enthusiasm for coaching and helping players develop to their fullest potential is very apparent.”

Kerr was drafted out the NSWC, #1 overall by the Prince George Cougars in 2004, and played 221 WHL games before wrapping his junior career in Spruce Grove and attending York University, where he transitioned from player to strength and conditioning coach with the Varsity Lions.

In another move, West Van Academy also announced that co-founder Yashar Farmanara will be departing operational and ownership roles at the Academy, deciding to step away to pursue interests outside of hockey.

Farmanara also served as the Elite 15 coach the previous two seasons.

The West Van Academy plays out of the Hollyburn Country Club, and partners with Sentinel High School on the academic side.

The organization is icing teams in Midget Prep, Elite 15, Bantam Prep and Bantam Varsity for the coming season.

The Bantam Prep team was approved by the league in the spring, the E15 program is entering its second year.
