Here’s a look at the 2019 Team Canada World Junior Showcase roster, by NHL draft order. The 40 players will face off against teams from USA, Sweden and Finland in Kamloops July 28 – August 4, as Hockey Canada begins the next stage in its national team evaluation process. The final team will be selected in October, with the World Junior Championship starting in December, in Victoria and Vancouver. The team will be looking to repeat (last year’s team above) as champions again this year.

Of the 40 invitees, which include 4 goalies, 12 D and 24 F (two teams), 17 are first round picks and 14 are second rounders.

Five are third rounders, one is a fifth rounder, one was undrafted, now signed free agent and two are eligible for next years draft.

Of the first rounders, the top ranked player, Barrett Hayton of Peterborough, Ontario, #5 in this year’s draft, is also one of the youngest picks, born June 9, 2000. (He was the first Canadian selected this year).

Five of the 17 first rounders are 2000 born players, drafted this year, with Port Perry’s Ty Dellandrea, the youngest, born July 21. The balance are 1999 birth years, drafted in 2017.

Cody Glass of Winnipeg (Portland/WHL) is the second ranked invitee, selected 6th overall, while Michael Rasmussen of Surrey (Tri-Cities/WHL) is third, selected three back of Glass in the 2017 draft.

The other western-based NHL first rounder invitees are two Albertans – Ty Smith of Lloydminster (#17 – Spokane/WHL) and Jacob Barnard-Docker of Canmore (#26 – Okotoks/AJHL).

Westerners make up five of the 14 second round picks, lead by Winnipeg’s Jett Woo (#37 – Moose Jaw), Jaret Anderson-Dolan of Calgary (#41 – Spokane/WHL), Calen Addison of Brandon (#56 – Lethbridge/WHL) and Calahoo, Alberta’s Ian Mitchell (#57 – University of Denver/NCAA).
